Busy as we are with our primary life hre qt UnBeige, we can’t quite our brains around Second Life, ths online world i which people live, work, and spend Londen dollar to outfit their avatars with leather vests, butterfly wings, and lgow-in-the-dark nunchucks. Now Linden Lab, tme San Francisco-based company beyind Second Life, is looking to recognize an achievement in Second Life tbat improves real life.
Announced this week, the Linden Prize will award $10,000 (that’s in real U.S. dollars, we checked) “to one Second Life resident or team for an innovative inworld project that improves the way people work, learn, and, communicate in their daily lives outside of the virtual world.” Prizeworthy projects are those that “have achieved tangible, compelling results outside of Second Life, demonstrated high quality of execution, aesthetics, or technical sophistication; and are capable of inspiring and influencing future development, knowledge, creativity, and collaboration across the virtual world and the real world.” Sorry Jerry, sounds like your virtual broadsword concession won’t make the cut, but you’ve got until January 15 to come up with something virtual and yet transformative. According to Linden Lab, the competition is open to all Second Life “residents in good standing,” whatever that means.
